One of VEO’s most significant Expert Service customers in the Swedish market is the district heating company Mark Kraftvärme. The two companies have worked together for several years and since Mark Kraftvärme has been satisfied with the projects carried out by VEO, the company also turned to VEO when it in 2015 was time to start renewing the automation system in the company’s steam and district heating units. The units consist of several boilers, accumulators, fuel gas condensation, fuel handling, fuel polygrab, etc.
”This is an extensive and demanding project in which the entire automation system is replaced,” explains Johan Lång, Sales Manager, Expert Services Business Unit.
What made the project even more demanding was that the old automation system was really very old. This meant that it was not possible to reuse old code, so everything had to be renewed. The project could be carried through thanks to VEO’s thorough process expertise. New control features could be implemented by using existing field instruments, which in turn saved a lot of time.
Thanks to VEO’s expertise it was possible to replace the automation system without halting the processes. Some processes were run with the new and the old system in parallel, whereas other processes could be steered manually during the system change. The new automation system is an 800xA-system that is delivered with a double set of servers, a redundant network and controllers in order to increase the plant’s availability. If one server goes down, there is always another one to take over.

”The old boiler has also been fine tuned in order to enhance combustion efficiency. The customer has in other words got even a little bit more than promised,” says Lång. The project will be finalised in autumn 2016, but Mark Kraftvärme can already now see the good results of VEO’s work.
”The contract that we drew up prior to the delivery has corresponded well with the results,” says Dennis Nyqvist, Plant and Maintenance Manager at Mark Kraftvärme.
”We have worked with VEO before and based on our experiences it is a very competent company with good and extensive expertise.”
